Photo by Ken Bohn, San Diego Zoo
Frank, a western lowland gorilla, was 8-months old when this photo was taken in May 2009. Frank stays with his family or troop at the Gorilla Tropics exhibit at the San Diego Zoo. (The exhibit is open every other day for visitors.)
Gorilla Fast Facts: An adult male gorilla on average weighs 300 to 500 pounds and will eat up to 40 pounds of food -- leaves, stems, fruits, seeds, and roots -- each day. Babies like Frank learn to walk by 6 months and stay close to mom, sharing her nest, until they are from 4 to 6 years old.
